How To Treat A Abscess Caused After Tooth Extraction?

I had a tooth extracted on Dec. 15th that had an abscess at the root (very painful - difficult extraction). Since then, I've also had to have some additional dental work had bad TMJ. I have pain in my jaw joint, cheek bone above where tooth was extracted and the extraction site is still quite tender. Could I still have an infection in the extraction siteā€¦ and if so, how can I cure it? I am so tired of having pain in that area. Any advice is very much appreciated.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain in case if you still have tenderness over the extraction site and the cheek in that area is still tender and as you already indicated that the extraction was difficult there is a high chance that some portion of root of the tooth is left accidentally in the socket and is not removed which is acting as a persistent source of infection and there can be underlying infection leading to tenderness and discomfort..
Other thing is that there can be residual infection at the extraction site and due to it there is discomfort..
You should consult a Dentist and get an x ray of the extraction site done so that the exact cause is ruled out and treated accordingly, for infection dentist can give you broad spectrum antibiotics like Augmentin 625 mg thrice daily and OTC painkillers like Ibuprofen 400 mg thrice daily, while for left out root piece removal of the same followed by antibiotics will relieve..

For TMJ or TMD intake of muscle relaxant and painkiller combination like Flexon MR OR Nucoxia MR, warm compresses, physiotherapy, ample of rest and taking soft diet can be be helpful and you need to take assistance from an oral physician for proper advise and treatment..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..
