How To Rule Out Depression?

My 75 year old friend with a history of a non malignant brain tumor that was removed 10 or 12 years ago, now is experiencing severe depression. In last few weeks, he can no longer walk without a walker and a nurse holding him. His medical staff say it is due to depression. Is that a symptom of depression? Or should a recurrence of his brain tumor be pursued? Bette Forberg. YYYY@YYYY
