Hi, My name is Vin. I'm so sorry for your
injury. Let me see if I can help and allay some of your fears.
First off, head injuries like this are pretty common and almost uniformly benign (not dangerous). So take comfort in the raw statistics of it all.
But if you want to get very specific. Here is a small list of signs and symptoms that I think SHOULD be a cause for concern and SHOULD send to you to the Doctor or to the ER as soon as you can.
A couple of things that you should look out for and be concerned about are:
1. Excessive sleepiness (Difficulty waking up later in the night)
2. Seizures... take immediately to ER
3.
Vomiting (people talk about projectile vomiting.. i'm not in the mood to see what a vomit balls hang time is.. lets just say any vomiting is bad)
4. Difficulty moving any part of the body or any new weakness across the body
5. Pupils are asymetric (one pupil in one eye is bigger than the other)
If any of these are true... get to the ER. If not.. I'd relax.
Since I'm not able to do a neurological exam on you I'm going to skip right to dispensing advice. The caveat that I'm making educated assumptions about your current condition must be kept in mind and if you see that one of my assumptions is wrong.. feel free to get back to me and set me straight.
Most of these kinds of head injuries end up causing a bit of brusing and stretching of the thin, soft tissues which surround the brain (called the
meninges) and that swelling and irritation WILL cause pain..
headaches and even
dizziness for hours to days after the injury. Over the counter pain relievers can help with the pain.. but not really with the dizziness.
To treat that you need to realize that your sense of balance has 3 inputs.. any of which can get messed up and cause dizziness.
1) The first are your eyes.. visual problems can cause pretty bad dizziness..
2) Your
inner ear.. irritation to the small canals in your ears can cause pretty annoying dizziness that lasts days.... any injury to the ear or the sides of the head can cause this.
3) The brain itself.. the brain gets all kinds of information that it then puts together and makes a #D map of the world for you to move through. When it's irritated then that map gets messed up and you get Dizzy.. I'm thinking that this might be the most likely explanation in your case.
The treatment of this kind of dizziness is REST REST REST. You need to lie down and close your eyes and allow the swelling in your head come down. Over time the brains balance and coordination should come back to normal.
If these symptoms DO last for more than 2-3 days then i'd make an appointment with the doctor.. If these symptoms seem to be getting worse.. Then i'd head for the ER.
So all in all. Try and relax and get a bit of rest.. I'm betting it will do you and the dizziness a world of good.
Take care
Vin
