Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I m 34 weeks pregnant and was told few weeks ago I have umbilical hernia. I was told to push bowel back in take paracentmol and rest. But since then I have been in unbearable pain and I m struggling to push back in will they offer to induce me I m a few weeks time if it persists
Hello and welcome to HCM, Umbilical hernia is managed by surgical correction. Increase in abdominal pressure will worsen the hernia by pushing further the abdominal contents into the hernia sac. Pushing of abdominal contents into the hernial sac will widen the defect and also cause pain. Pregnancy causes increase in intra-abdominal pressure and thus will worsen the condition. Surgical correction cannot be attempted at 34 weeks of pregnancy. Thus, you will have to wait till delivery. Conservative measures need to followed till that time. You can opt for cesarean section since the intra-abdominal pressure greatly increases during vaginal delivery and this may further worsen umbilical hernia. Consult your obstetrician and surgeon for further work up.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
