How To Deal With PICA?

Hi! I m kinda embarrassed bc I have a few questions... First question is regarding PICA... I think that I have a recurring issue with it of eating Ashes.. A habit that I picked up while pregnant almost 18yrs ago. I stopped for more than 15yrs & suddenly the urge has returned, what can I do? I am supposed to have blood work completed but I m afraid of damage that I may have cause myself...but I need the blood work bc I think that this is being caused by low iron or hypothyroidism... Help!!!

Hello and welcome to HCM,
Pica- a habit of eating inedible items like chalk, clay, ashes, etc are suggestive of iron deficiency in body.
Pica during pregnancy is very common because pregnancy is characterized by iron deficiency.
A complete hemogram is urgently required.
If hemoglobin level is low, iron studies will be required to assess the level of iron and ferritin.
In case of iron deficiency, iron supplements need to be taken to correct the iron deficiency.
I suggest you to consult your physician at the earliest for clinical assessment, complete hemogram, iron studies and thus further management.

Thanks and take care
