How To Avoid Food Getting Stuck Behind The Epiglottis?

I have been getting food stuck behing my eppiglottis for quite some time now. I never really notice until it overflows and then i stick my finger down my throat and clear it all out. i have been doing this for several months now and now i think as a result of this it has become swollen because i feel a tightness or pressure on my throat above my adams apple. Is there anyway to prevent this and stop the swelling?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I read carefully your query and understand your concern.

Over-the-counter medications designed to treat gas pain may help dislodge food stuck in the esophagus.
In the same way carbonated sodas can help in dissolving food stuck I the epiglottis.
I also suggest to drink liquids and gargle with salty water.
If the symptoms continue, you should see an ENT specialist.

Hope my answer was helpful.

If you have further queries feel free to contact me again.

Kind regards!
