Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Often Amiodarone Can Be Taken To Reduce The Elevated Heart Beat?
Hi my dad is 86 years old. He is taking Amiodarone HCL 200 mg to control his elevated heart rate. He takes one in the am and one in the pm. His resting heart rate was 120 this afternoon, so he took one extra pill; however, his current heart rate is 113. Can he take more? His doctor advised that he can take up to 6 pills a day, but we didn't ask the doctor how often he can take the med. It's close to 9 pm, so we couldn't call the doctor now. Please advise your recommendation. Thx in advance.
Amiodarone has a wide therapeutic window, so you can use up to six tablets for controlling the rhythm and heart rate and this can be done for a week or two.
However if i was your father doctor i would probably use another pill for controlling heart rate, because amiodarone is a good choice for rhythm control and a bad choice for rate control.
So i strongly suggest to talk again with your father cardiologist.
Hope i answered to your query. Dr. Benard
