How Much Folic Acid Can Be Taken During Pregnancy?

I am 8 weeks pregnant. Before pregnancy, my doctor started me on folic acid 5 me daily.I have type 2 DM and my iron/ferittin was always low.She has asked me to continue on it, but I am also taking materna, the prenatal multivitamin. Do you think this is right or am I taking too much? Worried.

hi,no you are not taking too much.these are water soluble vitamins and even if taken in excess they are excreted in urine and have no harm.would advise you to continue 5 mg folic acid throughout your pregnancy as apart from preventing neural tube defects it also prevents anaemia in the mother and reduces risk of complications like abruptio placenta.take care all the best.
