How Long Should Tamsulosin Be Taken?

In Jan of 2016, my ureter was completely closed, my kidney had infection and was very inflamed. The ureter had become constricted and looked like a z shape. They did surgery, cleaned out the pus, etc, and placed a stint in my ureter for about 2 mos. This was a year ago, although, I suffered for probably 2 years. They placed me on tamsulosin 0.4 mg, and I remain on it still. My question is this still necessary to be on the meds? I will say I have not had another incident since then, although I do have right side back aches on occasion on the side of the incident. What does the medication do for me? Is there a good reason to continue it this long?
