How Long Does Shingles Pain Last?

I had vasculitis of the kidneys 2 years ago, in April my creatin levels were 1.45. I have shingles and my internist prescribe 400mg of acyclovir twice a day. Will this really help, I m in a lot of pain and the rash started a week ago Sunday. I didn t know what it was at first and didn t get treatment until Friday. So I have had it for a week now. How long is the pain going to last?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HCM

The acute pain will last until the rash and inflammation last.
However, neuropathic pain associated with shingles can last longer. In some people, it can last for a life time. Treatment with acyclovir can prevent or shorten the duration of neuropathic pain. If the pain persists, anti seizure medication like gabapentin can be used for nerve pain. Topical capsaicin cream can also be used.

Hope this answers your question
