How Long Does Recovery Take After Suffering From Fractured Vertebrae?

Hi, I m a female college freshman who had a gymnastics accident two weeks before moving into college. I fractured two vertebrae and tore my back ligaments completely in half, so I was very lucky to not have been paralyzed. I also knocked myself unconscious for a few seconds but I don t remember anything for the first 10-15min after the injury. I had spine surgery a week before school started and moved in and it s been two months and none of my concussion symptoms have subsided... I thought they were getting better-ish but with all the studying I have to do, I ve reached a plateau lately and things are getting worse, so I feel as if I ve very much so prolonged my recovery and will have to leave school to rest. How long do you think it will take for me to heal? I know all cases are different, but just a general statement would be much appreciated. I am an elite gymnast and the blow to my head was pretty hard.. In fact, I still have a tender spot on my scalp from where I hit my head.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Let me discuss the recovery of your injury in separate aspects:
@ The concussion is related to head injury follow up and chronic subdural hematoma or others do present with concussion over a period of time. However, kindly provide your latest MRI report to your doctor.
@ The vertebral compression fracture after surgical fixation requires a period of 2-3 months for best results. So far as the returning to the gymnastic activity is concerned, it would take about 6 months period to return to the practice court.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
