Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Long Does Cellulitis Of The Foot Take To Get Cured?
My husband has been diagnosed with Cellulitis of the foot. He is diabetic and I took him to the Er the other day because we thought it was Gout but the gout meds were not helping the condition. They admitted him into the hospital and put him on IV meds, vancomycin and another med that I am not sure of. We were there 2 days and they sent him hoe with an antibiodic of clindamycin HCL 300 mg capsules, 3 times a day. However this is the 4th day of treatment counting the 2 days in the hospital and I do not think it is much better. How long should this last?
Thank you for your query. I understand your concerns.
Normally cellulitis treatment duration is for 7-10 days. Sometimes treatment is given for 14 days. So, you can expect to see some improvement by the end of 1 week.
In some patients, the cellulitis is slow to respond to treatment. This can be seen in diabetic patients (as their immunity is low) as healing from any infection takes a longer time. This is even truer if the diabetes is not well controlled. In these patients the treatment with antibiotics is extended for 3-4 weeks.
I wish your husband a speedy recovery.
I hope this answer has been helpful to you. Regards Dr Sunita Sayammagaru
