How Long Does Ramipril Take To Reduce The Blood Pressure?

I have been on Ramapril 5mg for 4 and a half weeks but my blood pressure is 179/92. I TAKE Climaval 1mg HRT after a total hysterectomy 3 years ago. I never had high blood pressure before all this. I don t want to be a nuisance but my blood pressure is erratic. How long should I give the Ramapril to work and what should I do please?

Hi,

Thank you for using HealthcareMagic. Ramipril belongs to a group of ACE inhibitors that prevents the action of chemical ACE and lowers blood pressure.

Usually, the drug reaches peak level in blood after 1 hour of its intake and within 4 hrs, inhibits action of ACE up to 80%. Thus, the effects should be noticed by reduction in blood pressure after 4 hours. It might take 4 days of daily intake of this medicine to get a steady level of blood pressure.

Thus, if you are taking Ramipril from 4 and a half weeks and still not having reduction in blood pressure, it means that either the drug selected for you is not working or you need higher dose than 5 mg. You should contact your treating doctor and discuss the issue.

I hope this answer guides you well. Let me know if you have further questions.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
