How Long Do Broken Fibula And Tibial Bones Take To Heal Post Surgical Repair?

My husband broke his fibula and tibula in march of this year. he had surgery whre they put in a rod and screws. he just had another xray and he is concerned because the bones still appear to be broken and not healed back together. he is 52 years old if that matters. just wondering if its normal at this time and his age for it to still look broken and not mended..thank you in advance.

Hi.
I've gone through your query and I can understand your anxiety.

Tibia & fibula fractures are the most common both bone fractures & it takes almost three to six months for the healing of both bones fractures .

If the type of fracture is a stress fracture, then it usually takes 6-8 weeks to heal . So with the history presented here I would advice you to follow the instructions given by your doctor for faster & better healing.

Also healing would be faster in children & slower in elders. Because In old age, lesser number of stem cells in the skeleton will slow down the ability to form new bone after a fracture. So I advice you to,

1.keep your leg immobile & at rest by wearing a brace for few weeks & avoid contact with water.

2. Rest & elevate the fractured leg.

3. Avoid putting weight on the fractured leg by using crutches.

4. Consume healthy diet rich in vitamin D, calcium, and zinc for faster bone recovery.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Take care.

Regards,
Dr. Yogapriya V, General and family physician.
