How Long Can Mirena IUD Be Used?

Hello,I have had the Mirena IUD for exactly 5 years now. It is time to get it removed, but I do not have the coverage to do so right now. I have called around to find prices to get the procedure done, but its not likely I could get it done this month. I have seen documentation stating its set to expire in 5 years, but the life expectancy is thought to be 7 years...Is this true? Please note, that its not my intention to keep it in that long, but I just need to know, What are the risks of having the IUD in past its expiration date?

Hello and welcome.

There are no risks, it just will not do its job as well as it is expected to do. So please begin to use an alternate source of contraception like condoms or birth control for now.

It is effective for 5 years, and anything longer than that cannot be guaranteed to provide the desired protection from conception.

Best wishes.
