How Long Primolut Be Taken To Avoid Menstruation?

Hi Dr, I m 50 and periods irregular sometimes extremely heavy/flooding. I m leaving for a 2 mth holiday in Europe, whilst periods don t usually bother me, I m very concerned with the heavy periods I m now experiencing impacting my holiday. 1. I m concerned with using Primolut N i.e. side effects and messing with mother nature, will Primolut mess up peri menapuse if I take it for a couple of months? 2. Can I wait until my period starts to see if it will be extremely heavy before taking Primolut and will my period cease if I do this? i.e. if my period is not bad I would rather go without taking Primolut. 3. Primolut N pack of 14 tablets - do I take 3 tablets per day, stop and then wait for my period to start again before starting the next box? This is the part that I m not sure about. 4. How long will my period stop or do you have to take the tablets without a break? 5. What can I expect once I stop taking Primolut after 2 mths? Thank you and I will appreciate your feedback. Clare

Hello,

I have gone through the query and understood your concern. Firstly, I would recommend a guided treatment with hormones and not self-medication. Secondly, you should decide if you want to get a period in the travel time or not. The management is based upon your requirement. Finally, there are other preparations better and safer than Primolut at your age. You can go for medroxyprogesterone alone or a low dose combination pill. There should usually be no cycle disturbance with a short course.

Hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Shanti Vennam
