How Can Withdrawal Symptoms Of Oxycodone Be Managed?

I am recovering from head and neck cancer. I am now in remission. During my treatment I took fentanyl and oxicodone for pain. I tapered down the fentanyl and quit using it two weeks ago. I did the same with oxyconpdone. I quit the oxycodone 7 days ago. I am still , suffering terrible withdrawal symptoms. My doctor prescribed Paxil to help relieve the symptoms. Should I take it? My wife is afraid I will become dependant on it. Should I take it?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Paxil is an anti-depressant which is not used for treating opoid withdrawal. If you are experiencing symptoms of depression, it is important to take Paxil. However, opoid withdrawal is best treated by slowly tapering down the dose, and medications like Clonidine,Suboxone etc. Please be advised to follow up with your treating physician to discuss.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
