How Can Tonsillitis And Cough Be Treated?

My 16 yr old daughter has extremely swollen tonsils and a cough. She had a coughing spell and her tonsils are actually bleeding and have pussy looking spots on it, almost canker sore looking. I have given her tylenol, she had a fever of 101 earlier. She is gargling with salt water and pushing the water. Is there anything else I need to do to stay on top of this? My 18 year old has a double ear infection which started with the same systems the 16yo now has. We are supposed to fly in the morning. Just need some advice to treat.

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

It looks like your daughter has a severe bacterial throat infection leading to inflammation of tonsils and pus pocket formation due to infection..

If it started in the similar way for your other daughter then it can be a spread of throat infection through the ear canal [Eustachian tube] to the ear.

So my suggestion is to consult an Emergency room and get evaluated..

A throat swab culture can be done for further confirmation.

For bacterial infection, only tylenol is not sufficient, you should take a course of antibiotics like Azithromycin, Augmentin etc and anti inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen in combination with Acetaminophen.
Make her do warm saline gargles atleast 2-3 times a day.
Doing antiseptic mouthwash gargles can also help..
Suck numbing lozenges like Cepacol can help in reducing pain.
Drink warm water and take soft and bland foods..

For ear ache also a course of antibiotics and painkillers along with antibiotic and analgesic ear drops can relieve..

Hope this helps..

Regards.
