How Can Thyroid Dysfunction Be Treated?

i am a 78yr old female, have had a colostomy some 20yrs ago, recent blood test has diagnosed a low thyroid and a colestral reading of 5.9. My doctor has proscribed a 20mg statin and a 25 mg levothyroxine tab daily without consulting. I have never had to take medication and relatively fit and 9 .5 stone weight. I would appreciate another opinion.
