How Can The Vagina Be Secured To Sacrum Relative To Bowels?

On July 8, 2014, I had a total hysterectomy (previously rt oophorsalpingoectomy in 1992) using DaVinci method, and my Dr used my own uterine ligament(s) to secure vagina in sacral colpopexy after being diagnosed with pelvic prolapse (uterine stage 2 with rectocele and cystocele). My question: I'm still unsure how my vagina is secured to sacrum relative to bowels and also how many stitches approximately. I am a new RN and anxious to begin work, but at age 59, I'm trying to be patient and not rush. Have tried to not pick up anything heavier than 10 lb.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

While doing sacral colopexy, the doctor will push the bowels from field to sides of abdominal cavity, so that they will not get injured. And by opening the peritoneum sacrum will be identified and vagina through ligaments will be sutured to sacral promontory. Number of sutures depends on need, approximately three or four. After suturing the bowels can be allowed to come back into position. And yes, you should not go for heavy weight lifting till around two months after surgery.
