How Can Stomach Ache Along With Fever And Vomiting Be Treated?

Hello, My 6 year old daughter decided it would be a good idea to use markers as nail polish. I told her to wait, that she can -only if- the markers wash off easily. By the time I returned from trying to get the marker off my ‘test nail’, she had already colored most of her nails, she hadn’t waited the few minutes it took. Now she has what’s best described as a stomach flu, with fever, vomiting, and lack of appetite. Could the markers have caused it? How long do you estimate the symptoms lasting? What remedies do you recommend and should I take her to the hospital? (She claimed to be feeling better after initially vomiting, but has another fever 12 hours later.) How serious is this? Thank you for your advice!

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

In my opinion, it is NOT likely that the markers caused this. It is probably a stomach flu or may be subacute appendicitis. If the symptoms decrease over today and tomorrow, you could be assured that it is nothing serious.

If the symptoms persist or worsen, you should take your daughter to the hospital or your local clinician. Ensure that your daughter drinks adequate amounts of water. You could give her syrup Emeset for vomiting and Pantaprazole.

You could also give her a syrup formulation of Paracetamol like calpol for the fever. Ensure 6 hours gap between two doses.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan
