How Can Social Anxiety And Agoraphobia Be Treated?

I m a 18 year old female, 5 7, and 108 pounds. Lately I ve been ill because of severe mental illness making me extraordinarily tired. I ve started feeling physically sick and all signs say it s due to a lack of exercise. Great! So there s a solution! Problem is, I m so ill BECAUSE of the lack of exercise, I can t exercise. Even starting off slowly doesn t work. It s just so paradoxal and I don t know what to do. I have severe social anxiety and agoraphobia and haven t left the house in months, and I don t plan to just because of a silly sickness. Any tips?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Are you tired due to the illness (is it the anxiety and agoraphobia) or medications from these?

I would advise seeing a counselor (psychologist) if you aren't already, to discuss strategies for dealing with these anxieties. SSRI medications and others can be helpful for treating this also.

In the meantime, there are exercises, such as dancing to music, that can be done from home until you are feeling able to go out more.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bonnie Berger-Durnbaugh, General & Family Physician
