How Can Severe Muscle Cramps In The Body Be Treated?

I have been experiencing severe muscle cramping throughout my body for a few years (mostly in the stomach, sides and back) but they have been increasing lately in frequency and intensity the last year or so. Just coughing can make my stomach muscles seize up and cause me extreme pain that lasts for about 30 minutes. I try to stay well hydrated and take potassium tablets. I do have COPD and use duo nebs as well as Symbicort daily. This is getting so bad that I am afraid to do anything physical anymore for fear the cramps will start and I can t handle the pain. I have asked several doctors about this over the years and they brush it off as if it s nothing, but it is becoming debilitating. Would taking daily muscle relaxers help?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

These cramps could be due deficiency of vitamin D, calcium or other minerals and electrolytes. You need to evaluate by taking routine blood tests including CBP, serum electrolytes, calcium, vitamin D levels,Esr,CRP. After doing these tests we can get an idea about the underlying problem.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
