How Can Severe Laryngitis Be Treated?

Have had severe laryngitis-NO voice- 6days. Visit to MD for upper respiratory (running nose, post nasal drip, hard cough with sputum greenish in color/no fever just prior to losing voice). Am heart failure/diabetes 2/asthma patient. No anti-biotics-Rx Prednisone tab 20 mg 1xdaily for 5 days. Day 6--still no voice at all; no fever. Suggestions how to get back to normal ?? Using salt water gargle but sparingly- also stage 3 deteriorating kidney.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The mainstay of laryngitis treatment is to:

1. Give rest to your voice
2. Do warm saline gargles at least 3- 4 times a day
3. An anti-inflammatory such as Ibuprofen and
4. An antihistaminic such as Levocetirizine

Do all these for 5-6 days and you will get back your voice. Please avoid spicy food.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Prabhash Verma, General & Family Physician
