How Can Severe Knee Pain In An Elderly Person Be Treated?

Hi doc I m 64 in reasonably good health but I am experiencing pain in my knees. I am overweight and have changed my shoes and I use orthotic inserts I have been to a specialist and he says I do not need a knee replacement and my GP hasn t given me a lot of help. What are your thoughts? I m beginning to get depressed about it as its affecting my work and leisure time too.

Hello and welcome to HCM.
I have gone through your query and understand your query. The health complaints you are facing is due to age related osteoarthritis.
If I were your treating doctor,I recommend the following for knee pain and weight control,
-Antiniflammatory drugs like ibuprofen or naproxen twice per day for 3-5 days along with cap one once in morning.
-local application of dynapar gel as and when needed.
-local application of ice compression for 15 minutes 3-4 times a day and using compression bandage on knees.
-do strength training exercises for e.g..hamstring stretch accompanied by yoga.
-take calcium supplements 400 mg once in morning
-Never take inadequate calories for loosing diet.Take a balanced diet containing adequate cereals, pulses, fruits, vegetables, dairy, poultry.Avoid sweet, salty, processed, fried foods.Include lots of salads in every menu.Include high omega fatty acid containing food in your diet like flax seeds, fish etc for your joints.
Still if symptoms persists, you will need to visit orthopaedician for further management.
Thanks and regards.
