How Can Severe Earache Be Treated?

My 12 year old son went swimming in a lake while camping with his Boy Scouts Troop last week . The last time he swam was Thursday. Tonight, he just complained about severe ear pain. He said it felt loud like someone was cooking bacon in his ear (sizzling sound). No fever. I used some OTC ear pain relief oil (Murine) and he said it appeared to make it worse. Any advice?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Ear pain can be better relieved by using ear drops containing Benzocaine drug.

It will relieve pain after instillation. Prevention is important to prevent chronic ear discharge.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
