How Can Severe Earache Be Treated?

My partner has an ear ache. She contracted a severe cold two days ago and flew on an 8 hour plane ride yesterday. She initially felt the pain in her right ear yesterday on the flight, and it has recurred just now with significant intensity. She has taken Advil and has used some warm oil just to manage the pain. Are there other steps or over the counter medications that may help?

Hello,

As per your query, you have symptoms of severe earache which is due to Eustachian Tube Dysfunction.

I would suggest you to:
- Take Ibuprofen medicine for pain and apply dry warm compresses on external ear
- Do warm saline gargles
- Take proper antibiotic course
- Avoid cold carbonated beverages
- Do Valsalva maneuver
- Avoid intake of hot, sharp and spicy foods

You should consult ENT specialist for proper checkup. Doctor may order blood tests and throat swab tests. The doctor may prescribe antibiotics like gentamycin along with anti-inflammatory.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
