How Can Severe Earache Be Treated?

I have severe ear pain when flying. I tried all the common tips such as yawning, chewing gum, opening mouth wide, etc., all to no avail. It has been a big help to take sudafed before take off but it doesn t seem to work as well anymore. Any other suggestions?

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of severe earache. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to

- Take ibuprofen for pain and apply dry warm compresses on external ear. -- Do warm saline gargles.
- Avoid cold carbonated beverages.
- Avoid intake of hot, sharp and spicy foods.

You should consult ENT specialist for proper checkup. Doctor may order blood tests and throat swab tests. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics like gentamycin along with anti inflammatory.
