How Can Severe Diarrhea In An Elderly Person Be Treated?

Hello, my husband is 72 years old. He has symptoms of IBS W/FLATULENCE AND BOUGHTS OF DIARRHEA. He s sensitive to dairy products. He refuses to get a colonoscopy to get proper medication. Besides probiotics, is there any natural remedies that I can give him? He takes Walgreen s diarrhea OTC for the diarrhea episodes.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Thanks for posting your query on HCM
I have read and understood your concern
The treatment of his condition will depend on the cause.Possible causes may include: digestive viral, bacteria or parasitic infection, lactos intelerance...I will advise you see the Doctor for a stool exam/culture and sensitivity test as a course of antibiotics may be needed. In the meantime, you may try the following:
-Take oral rehydration salt to replenish fluid and ions losses
-An anti-diarrheal like imodium
-Continue with probiotics
Hope this will help. You may write back if more concerns
Best regards
