How Can Severe Constipation In A Child Be Treated?
Hi, my son is 4 years old and has been battling severe constipation for the past couple of months... To the point of screaming and crying when he has to go. It s to the point now where we have to administer an enema once a week just to help him go. I am taking him to his dr in the morning, but my son just went to the bathroom by himself (for the first time in a while) and almost filled the toilet up. I noticed in his stool that there were small lines of holes (almost the size of the end of a pencil tip) in a perfect line in most of his stools. I thought it looked a little odd, and I ve never seen this before. Do you think this is something worth mentioning tomorrow or am I overthinking this?
I don't think the small lines of holes is of any clinical significance as far as constipation is concerned. Suggestions:
1. Natural methods are the best to relieve constipation.
2. Constipation is a risk factor for UTI.
3. Maximum milk consumption per day should not exceed 300-400 ml.
4. Minimum 3-4 cups of fruits and vegetables to be consumed per day.
5. Toilet training - that is - sitting in an Indian type of lavatory daily at the same time will help a lot.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Sumanth Amperayani,
