How Can Severe Congestion In The Nose And Breathing Difficulty Be Treated?

I was recently prescribed a medication called pseudoephedrine HC1 30 MG ORAL TAB for severe nasal congestion. I have used the over-the-counter decongestant called Neil med sinufrim which last for 12hr relief for at least 6mo or more. I was told by my primary care physician that I needed to stop using the nasal spray being that it can cause serious damage to my nasal passage. He also suggested I use Neti Pots rinses to help with the decongestant. My nasal congestion is so severe that I have panic attacks because I cannot breathe through my nose, and breathing through my mouth becomes very difficult because I also suffer from COPD. When I am in and episode it is important to have instant relief or I panic. I have even woken up unable to breathe through the night. So after finding out that this medication is also the over the counter Sudafed, is the dosage strength the same as the prescription he described? I also purchased a new Steam mask rinse machine which I am to use a few times a day and take dosage of the Sudafed daily. No one seems to understand the severity I feel when my nose clogs and I can t breathe through my nose and having to breathe through my mouth. I also feel tightness through my neck like it swells up. The doctor also said if I could get through at least a week of trying this process, I should start to feel better. What kind of advice do you could suggest me with this medical issue? Your opinion is greatly appreciated.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I advice you to go to the ENT specialist to check whether there is any mass in the posterior side of the nose or pharynx. Keep your bed elevated upto 30-45 degree to avoid difficulty in breathing. Yes continuous long term use of nasal spray is not good for nasal mucosa as it may cause atrophy of nasal mucosa. Budecort inhaler will also help you as you have COPD also. Talk to your physician before you take any medicine.

Hope I have answered your query.
