How Can Severe Anxiety And Depression Be Treated?

I am a 49year old female. For the last year and a half, I have been dealing with severe anxiety and depression. I believe it is related to peri menopause, as I had severe post partum depression after each child birth, and I had hot flashes for the first year (they ve subsided over the past 6 months), as well as changes in my cycle (I didn t have a period for over a year, but it has come back for 3 months in a row now starting in Jan 2017), as well as less common symptoms of peri menopause like tinnitus and breast cysts (still have these symptoms). I can handle any and all physical symptoms but the anxiety and depression are all but killing me. It is crippling and I am not functioning. I forgot to mention my heart races and pounds hard nearly at all times. My question is.....will my body ever adjust to lower levels of reproductive hormones? My body obviously doesn t like low hormones, as evidenced by post partum depression, but after about 8 to 9 months the hormones built back up and the depression lifted. But I m worried that since my body won t be producing the levels of hormones that it has been in my reproductive years, that this might not lift. What do you think?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
There are two very serious issues here. One is that if you had no period for 1.5 years and then had bleeding, this could be a sign of uterine cancer and you need to let your doctor know about this immediately.
Next is that while you may recover from the anxiety and depression, if you have been suffering for a year and a half with this then you need to get on a medication to relieve the symptoms. After you are feeling better and have been for 6-12 months you can try coming off the medicine but you need medicine now. Please see your doctor as soon as possible
Regards
