How Can Scoliosis Be Treated?

i have had scoliosis since childhood. Most of my life it was around 20 degrees. Within the last year it has gotten somewhat worse (now 32 degrees). it is also twisted. I am told that there also several areas of spurs and narrowing in areas of spine. I am not in much pain, but am experiencing weakness in both my legs, some cramping in less and feet and some numbness and tingling in feet. I m very stiff in lower back and cannot easily bend over. My neurosurgeon has suggested two surgeries: one to remove the arthritis and one to stabilize my spine with strews and such. I have had shots several times previously of steroids and physical therapy with no improvement. I am worried that this surgery is very invasive and concerned about whether it is right for me. Can you offer some advice?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service. I have read your question and here is my advice.

Scoliosis when severe may be troublesome. You are right, the surgery is not a minor one. If it is severe for you and you have weakness, if injections in the spine have no benefit, I think you should go for the surgery, though it is not a simple surgery. There are risks, however in the hands of experts, it is most uneventful.

I hope I have answered your question. I would be glad to answer any further question if you have.

Regards,
Dr Rahman
