I think the small plastic back to an earring is stuck in my daughters pierced hole. It looks infected its red and swollen. And it happened to her other ear which I saw the back and was able to get it out. But I m not sure if it happened to the other ear. The infected ear is hard so I m not sure if its just pus or if the back is stuck in her ear. Messing with it you don t see it. Should I take her to the doctor? Does it require attention immediately? My daughter is 18 months.
Hi. Yes. I would urge you to visit a doctor soon and have this treated. It sounds like an infection has set off possibly due to a reaction with the earring or the plastic back portion (? contact allergy leading to inflammation and then infection). If its red and tense it suggests pus and the infection can spread to the ear cartilage and lead to deformities. Your daughter will require a small procedure to remove the plastic stub and also local dressing with betadine and ointments. She may require oral antibiotic drops to control the infection if she develops a fever soon. I would not wait on this.
