How Can Persistently High Body Temperature Be Treated?

Hi. I have a friend who is experiencing high body temperature. She says it feels as though the heat is coming from deep inside her body. She doesn t have the flu . And its not fever. Nor is it from any kind of exercise. It has been persisting for the last five days. She did a blood test and the results are normal. Can you please help?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
High Body temperature simply means that the body is working hard thus producing lots of energy. The metabolism level has increased. This could be for many causes but one striking that requires medical attention is thyrotoxicosis. The thyroid gland might just be working hard either due to temporary infection of the gland or for some other reason. Thyroid gland tests need to be performed notably TSH and Free T4. Does your friend has palpitations? Restlessness? weight loss? irregular pulse? For now your friend will need to avoid aspirine (used commonly to reduce temperature). If it is confirmed thyroxicosis the doctor may prescribe propylthiouracil or methimazole.
