How Can Persistent Headaches, Occurring On And Off, Be Treated?

My 23 yr. old daughter had been having headaches off and on since last August or Sept. She s going to be married this May and her fiancé and I are both concerned. She initially thought stress was a factor due to being separated from her fiancé. After moving to the same town, the headaches were better for a couple of months, only to return. She/we aren t sure what to do next. Help?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The most common causes for headaches are trauma, migraines, sinus headaches, tension, cluster, headaches due to a mass.

If there is no family or previous personal history of migraines then this is not likely. Migraines may also be accompanied by nausea, worsening headache with noise and light.

If the headaches are in the temporal region and associated with tightening of the neck and/or shoulders, then they may be tension headaches.

If there is a history of sinus disease and symptoms such as nasal congestion, sneezing etc, then sinus congestion may be the cause.

If it is an intensely painful headache, occurring on one side in the region of the eye, then it may be cluster headache

If there is associated loss of balance, change in vision , nausea/vomiting, then it may be due to a mass.

It would be best, since the headaches are severe and occurring frequently, for her to be assessed by her doctor.
This would include a full history of the headaches and associated symptoms and may, depending on the history and examination, require imaging such as CT.

I hope this helps
