Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have terrible case of neuropathy in the feet and have suddenly begun to feel it in my hands. I don t have diabetes. I have had fibromyalgia for 43 years. I am 87 yrs. old. I take 3600 mg of gabapentin a day. It doesn t help enough. I have tried lyrica and savella. Both have made me extremely nervous, although they helped. Years ago I took amitriptyline for help with the fibro. I was fine ,but when the dr. raised the mount to 5omg I got very bad dry mouth and stopped taking it. I asked my Dr. to give me The Amotriptyline but i m sure 25mg won t be enough to help me. What are your thoughts?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Treatment of peripheral neuropathy consists in:
- Over-the-counter pain medications, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication. You can try Ibuprofen three times a day
- Topical treatments such as capsaicin cream, which contains a substance found in hot peppers
If the symptoms continue you should consult a neurologist for further treatment.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi
