How Can Pain In The Hamstring Be Treated?

I have a painful hamstring. I think it was strained while I was doing a fitness exercise that involved lying on my side and lifting the lower leg. This occurred about 4 or 5 weeks ago. I can still do everything, but the hamstring hurts when I sit down and when I go up stairs. Right now, it hurts most of the time except when I am lying down (I played a lot of tennis yesterday). I have tried taking Advil (but not much of it). The pain is centered about one-third of the way down my leg. It may also be a little tender at the top (joint). I weigh about 110 pounds and am 5 feet 4 inches tall. I m almost 78 years old but am in very good health except for this problem. Do you think deep massage therapy would help?

General Surgeon 's  Response
You have obviously strained your hamstring muscle during exercising. It is also possible that a few fibers of the muscle are torn.. The best and most effective treatment for this is to rest your affected lower limb, till complete healing of the injured muscle group. A stretch injury may take 2 to 3 weeks, and any torn fibers can even take up to 6 weeks to heal completely. Till then you will have to avoid exercising the limb, playing tennis or any even moderately strenuous activity. The more rest you give, the faster the muscles will heal. Please avoid deep massage, as it can worsen the condition, especially if any muscle fibers are torn. Once the pain has resolved and the injury has healed, please start exercising the limb with slowly and gradually increasing intensity. Please do not start off with very strenuous activity.
