How Can Nausea And Diarrhea Be Treated While Suffering From Parkinson S Disease?

My 71 year old friend with diagnoses of Parkinson and probable Lewy Body has been having much problems with nausea, diarhea. Has recently had Venlafaxine increased, and 5mg of Memantine added to medicine. She has also taken Carbidopa/Levodopa for about a year. Off and on problems with nausea, diarrhea, but has increased in past month. Other meds that she has taken for years is Atorvastatin, Levothyroxine, Omeprazole. Now refusing to take any meds. Currently has neck pain in addition to nausea and headaches.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Nausea, diarrhea and neck pain may not be related to the Parkinsons.
Yes, many medications including Levodopa, Memantine, Venlafaxime can cause such a problem. Atorvastatin, Levothyroxine may not be the cause as the patient is taking these for a long time.
Other reasons that need consideration are as follows:
Gastritis and GERD.
Gastroenteritis as there is diarrhea too.
Hepatitis.
Any disease can cause nausea as a secondary effect.
Hence I would advise her the following:
To get the examination done by a Doctor.
Get required investigations of blood, stool, urine and Ultrasonography of abdomen.
All these will give a proper diagnosis and a plan of further management.
She is already taking Omeprazole hence the need for further evaluation and management as per the clinico-pathological correlation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant,
