Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Lichen planopilaris is a rare inflammatory condition that results in patchy progressive permanent hair loss, mainly on the scalp. It commonly develops in association with lichen planus affecting the skin, mucosa and nails. No treatment recovers hairs that have been lost. Hair loss may continue, although at a slower rate with treatment. Anti-inflammatory treatment options include:
1. Corticosteroids – potent topical, intralesional, oral
2. Topical tacrolimus
3. Hydroxychoroquine
4. Tetracycline, e.g. Doxycycline
5. Acitretin
6. Methotrexate
Response to treatment is variable in this condition. The best patients can expect is to stop progression of hair loss and to minimize scalp discomfort.
Hope the information provided helps. All the best.
Regards,
Dr. Ashakiran. S
