How Can Itching And Redness On The Skin Be Treated?

Hi Doctor I have been using Betnovate N for almost 2 yrs now. It started with a Doctor prescribing me Betnovate N for skin rashes I had and after that whenever I stopped rashes and the itch came back and forced me to use Betnovate N again. Now if I try to stop its use, after 3-4 days my face starts getting itchy and red. please give me a remedy for this. Thanks

Hi.
Thanks for the query..

It seems that itching and redness of skin is due to Contact Dermatitis that can occur due to allergic reaction to either any skin cosmetic while can also be due to soaps, detergents, foods, medicines etc..

Betnovate is a steroid based cream and although it can help in relieving itching but being a Steroid, its continuous use has severe side effects like skin thinning, pimples, inflammation, rashes, itching, excess hairgrowth and dilated veins under the skin..

Also on long term use the skin becomes addicted or dependant on steroids and once the use is suddenly stopped, there are withdrawal side effects and it is the same thing that you are facing now that is increased pigmentation, rashes, swelling, redness etc..

I would suggest you to consult an Allergist and get allergic tests like Patch test, RAST test, food challenge test etc can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..
The tests will help in ruling out the exact cause of the allergen and once you know the cause of the allergic reaction you can avid exposure to it to prevent allergy attack..

You can be advised to take anti allergics like benadryl..
Do steam inhalations..
He can also be instilled an Immunotherapy that will help in reducing the severity and frequency of allergic attack..
Once the allergen is ruled out avoiding exposure to it can prevent the allergy symptoms..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
