How Can Indigestion Be Treated?

Hello, I have been having horrible indigestion and it doesn't seem to be going away. I tried eating something but even on an empty stomach I have it. Do you have any suggestions on what I might be able to do. Tums have worked in the past but are not helping today.

Thanks for contacting with your health concern

1. Indigestion is not a disease but symptom of an underlying disease, like
- swallowing ear while eating can result in symptoms of belching/bloating/ acid reflux which are often associated with indigestion.

2. Although 'STRESS' [anxiety] doesn't cause indigestion but can make disease of digestion worse like stomach ulcer, inflammatory bowel disorder, celiac disease, thus consult a Gastroenterologist for necessary examination and investigation [endoscopy, blood tests]. [since Tums [antacids] is not working]

3. till you get an appointment, certain diet and lifestyle modifications which you can incorporate are:

- eat slowly, avoid haste-irregular eating and sweet/heavy food which are difficult to digest and cause indigestion.
- lose weight if overweight.
- avoid eating dairy products, spicy food, and spicy condiments, stay away from artificial sweeteners.
- take less of strong spices (ginger, garlic), oily-fried-fatty food and flatus producing foods (peas, beans, dals)

PS. If symptoms persist, call your doctor since it can be symptoms of underlying illness or infection which require medical intervention, at present going by your history and symptoms, the most probable diagnosis could be functional IBS [irritable bowel syndrome] or GERD.
