Greetings! "Is she doomed"? Your friends chances of having an adverse outcome because of her
hypertension is much higher than it would be if she had more
oxygen to breathe. The heart lives on oxygen and deteriorates faster when surrounded constantly by second-hand smoke. So, we have first hand, second hand and now third hand smoke, which is also carcinogenic. I hope the smokers are cleaning up their cancerous deposits on the rugs and counters.
What can you do with your diet to help your (conditions?) and
high blood pressure with the medication you are on? To try to answer your initial concern, RDs traditionally recommend the
DASH diet as a first course of therapy along with
weight loss if needed, a mild exercise program appropriate for age with emphasis on fresh fruits and
coenzyme Q10 eventually due to being on a
statin medication. However, the DASH diet does limit sodium and since that may be an issue with your physician, please ask him if following the DASH diet with limited sodium and mild exercise such as 30 minutes of walking per day, would be ok with him.
If you would like more specific guides, please write back with height, weight, sex, age, medications, diagnosis, 1 day meal plan, weight goal, blood pressure trends and any labs. Thank you for coming to HCM. Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
