How Can Headache And Stiff Neck Due To Prednisone Withdrawal Be Treated?

I was prescribed 40mg of prednisone about 3 months ago from the ER and by the time i saw my Dr. it was about 3 weeks later. my doctor was furious I was given that high dose for such a long time and ha to wean me off slowly and safely. I experienced many side effects ( headaches, stiff neck, depression, rapid heart beat etc) all symptoms have subsided except for the head aches and stiff neck. I m going on one week off the pred and nothing yet. it s terrible. I asked my doctor but he doesn t think prednisone has anything to do with the stiff neck. Will my neck pain go away? is there anything i can do to relive the pain? I also had meningitis about 16 years ago, and some people say when you get sick you will feel meningitis symptoms because it never really leaves your body? is this accurate. The pain I feel it s like it s in my brain in the lower part of my brain, by my neck. What do you suggest?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are suggested to get yourself examined by an ENT, for headache & neck pain. You will have to get blood & Imaging tests done to rule out any cervical stenosis or spondylitis.

Cervical vertebrae issues can cause neck stiffness & pain. Your treatment will depend upon the diagnosis made, if required you may be referred to a GP for you have a history of Meningitis.

In the meantime maintain correct posture, stay away from stress, anxiety, addictions of any. Take adequate sleep. You can take NSAIDS or Combiflam -400 mg, for relieve of pain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
