How Can Dystonia Be Treated?

I am a 56 year old woman with generalized dystonia. I have bilateral deep brain stimulators. Recently I began horseback riding lessons, a sport which I greatly enjoy, and will help build core muscle strength. I have difficulties with balance, and want to develop my core muscles. I always ride with a helmet. A few weeks ago, I was thrown by my horse and have fractured ribs (ribs 2,3 and 4) and a fracture of my shoulder. My ribs resulted in a pneumothorax of my right lung, which was treated with a chest tube. My doctors are of differing opinions about the advisability of my continuing to ride. Want to weigh in?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Dystonia may treated with physical therapy , muscle relaxant s ,pain killers, anti depressants etc. Avoid spicy food and alcohol avoid smoking and caffeine drinks. Consult your neurophysician to find cause for dystonia. Horse riding not good for your health.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
