How Can Diverticulitis Be Treated?

I have diverticulitis, had 9 of the sigmoid colon removed years ago because of a cyst the size of a small grapefruit and had to have a colostomy for 3 mo while it healed. This weekend I attended a st. Patrick s Day dinner and within 3 hours I was doubled over with pain throughout my belly and it was sore , hard and I felt bloated. Bowels had not moved since Friday, the 16th. I had no fever but vomited 11 times, ending up vomiting bile. Tuesday morning at 4 a.m. the bowels broke loose and I ran all day and into the night. Could this have been food poisoning or does it sound like diverticulitis Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The current symptoms are due to underlying intestine infection with flare up of diverticulitis. After evaluation of vital parameters of pulse, blood pressure, and general signs of dehydration, I prefer to give patient oral or intravenous medications as per the clinical concern. I strongly recommend to consult your PCP.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr Purva Patel
