How Can Cough Be Treated?

Hi. I am 5 ft 5 in and weigh just under 100 lbs and so I try to drink 6 1/2 - 7 cups of water daily from our Berkeley gravity fed water filter. It seems that whenever I drink the amount of water I feel I should be drinking, I cough, but if I drink only drink a very small amount of water, I don t cough at all. Since I ve had this cough for 2 years now, I m getting desperate on how to get rid of it but surely removing water from my diet is not the answer! Oh, never mind about the water. I ve not been drinking much water but just now had a coughing fit. Sure would like to know what to do about this cough though.

Hello and welcome to ask a doctor service. I reviewed your query and here is my answer.
Is it dry cough or productive? Is it associated with shortness of breath? If it is only dry cough and occurs only after drinking, then it is most likely due to regurgitation of water into the throat. Do you have any heartburn or water coming into your throat?
For that you will definitely need some measures like, drinking less amount of water at a time, in fact you can drink frequently but less at a time. You will need to have a walk of at least 40 steps after drimking or taking meals. Have a gap of at least 2 hours between meal and going to bed. Raise the head end of the bed. And if these doesn't help, then you will need some medications like omeprazole, itopride etc to lower your gastric secretion or increase gastric emptying.
Hope i answered your question. Feel free to ask more if you need further assistance. Thanks.
