How Can Chronic Cough Be Treated?

I have had a combination ear infection, bacterial sinus infection and an upper respiratory issue that’s got an ongoing cough that I cannot get relief from for over 13 days now. I’ve been prescribed Cipro 500, Tessalon and Cipro ear drops. The improvements have occurred, but to be honest, I’m still dealing with the cough the most. My question: can I take a liquid cough suppressant or expectorant without complications with Cipro? I may only have the expectorant for right now. But if I can take that, it would be better than nothing...please advise. Thank you.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Cough usually takes few days more after the antibiotic course is over. So, if there is no other complaint and cough is dry, you can take dry cough syrup with warm water 2 to 3 times a day.

Avoid things like spicy food, sour things, cold things while eating, avoid exposure to fumes, smoke, strong perfumes. Persistent cough after 7 days of syrup/aggravation of cough suggests:

- Allergy as a basic cause
- Incomplete sinus healing with persistent post nasal drip and cough
- Staphylococcal infection/causative bacteria resistant to the antibiotic
- Tonsillitis causing irritation of throat

In such conditions, you need to consult ENT specialist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale
