How Can Chapped Lips Be Treated?

Hello. I woke up two days ago with a lip lieson. As if I accidentlly took to many layers off my lip. I've been dealing with extreme dry lips recently. I went to the doctors (not my family doctor)that morning. He said he thinks it might be a cold sore or just infected. He precriped cold sore oral meds and also told me to put polysporin on it.
Personally I don't think it is a cold sore. No symptoms like a cold sore. Doesn't look like a cold sore and I've been around x boyfriends with cold sores in the past. I leave the country in a day for vacation and I really want this figured out before I leave.
Any ways I think i may had gone through this before I can't remember. But I do have a tube of fucidin cream. Could it be possible it's a bacterial infection and the fucidin cream will actually help? Since the cold sore meds don't seem to be doing anything.
Thanks

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your query, you have chapped lips which seems to be due to excessive licking of lips along with dry climatic condition which remove the natural moist layer from the lips due to which cracks starts appearing on the lips which further become prone to fungal infection.

Well, this is very common. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to use petroleum jelly to maintain moisture of lips. Avoid exposure to sunlight. Avoid using creams containing high steroid content. Drink lots of water and avoid staying in dry environment for longer period.

Wash your face with mild soap twice a day and avoid licking your lips. If condition keeps on persisting then visit dermatologist once and get complete examination done and start treatment accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
