How Can Brittle Toe Nail Be Treated?

My 5 yr old Aussie has had several episodes of torn toe nails. It happens when i kick the ball for him in the back yard. I have him on Acana dog food NuPro supplement, coconut oil, vitE and gelatin. He was okay for 2 months then tore another nail. I use a dremel on his nails. Is there anything I m overlooking?
